Nobel Laureate Hartmut Michel attends JLU's Dingxin Lecture

Professor Hartmut Michel, winner of Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1988 and professor at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Germany, delivered a lecture, as part of the Dingxin Lecture Series, at Jilin University (JLU) on Sept 19, 2023.
ZHAO Hongwei, Vice President of JLU, attended the lecture and presented Michel with a commemorative plaque. The event was hosted by YU Xianghui, dean of the College of Life Sciences.
Michel elaborated on the biochemical mechanisms of photosynthetic reactions and systematically introduced his long-term research on membrane proteins related to cellular energy conversion.
He also proposed a strategic concept for targeting enzyme molecules to achieve clinical treatment of pathogenic microorganisms, offering new ideas for addressing drug-resistant diseases such as tuberculosis.
During the Q&A session, Michel engaged in extensive discussions with faculty and students from the College of Life Sciences, covering topics such as protein structure analysis, the catalytic efficiency of photosynthesis, and structure-based drug development.
Nearly 600 faculty and students from various departments, including the Office of Global Engagement and the College of Life Sciences, attended the lecture.
